In a folding roof for vehicles, in particular motor vehicles, having a front and a rear roof part, the rear roof part can be swivelled together with the front roof part into a folded-back countersunk position by means of parallelogram joint. The front roof part engages on the front edge of the rear roof part in a folding-back fashion. The joint parallelogram consists of a first linkage which connects the C pillar and a second linkage which is located behind the first linkage in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, which linkages are coupled in each case to the vehicle body on the one hand and to the rear roof part on the other. The second linkage is divided in two by a toggle joint in such a way that it consists of a first part which is coupled to the vehicle body and a second part which engages on the rear roof part in an articulated fashion. Such a folding cover consists of few parts, is of lightweight construction and easy to actuate. It can be lowered in the open position below the main pivot point, i.e. the lower articulation point of the C pillar on the vehicle body, the lateral parts of the roof frame being capable of being fixed horizontally or in any desired oblique position and a vertical position. In the folded-together state, the folding roof is characterised in that it only requires a small amount of space.
