The invention relates to a process for the liquefaction of a gaseous medium, e.g. argon, by means of a liquid coolant, e.g. nitrogen, the temperature of which is below the boiling temperature of the medium to be liquefied. The invention furthermore consists of an apparatus for the liquefaction of a gaseous medium which is stored in a storage container, two superposed containers being arranged above the liquid level in the storage container, and cools the medium in the containers by means of communicating tubes.
