The holding device for a separating head which interacts with a pile of sheets has a holding rail which is mounted on a frame on one side of a pile of sheets. Standing on the holding rail is a vertical rod (7), along which a horizontal support (6) is displaceable. One end of the horizontal support (6) supports the separating head (1) and in the working position of the separating head (1), the other end rests on a nut (5) which permits fine adjustment to the height of the pile via a spindle and a geared motor. The support (6) is vertically displaceable between two guide strips (16 and 17), but is mounted in a torsion-proof manner. An elastic element in the form of a cable (21) engages with the support (6), is diverted via the guide strips (16, 17) and supports a counter weight (13) on its free end. By engaging a button (9) of the support (6), the latter can be displaced in a reciprocating manner along the rod (7) without great expenditure of force, so that the space necessary for stacking can be made available in a very simple manner and the separating head (1) can be lowered back into the working position in an equally simple manner. <IMAGE>
