A measuring system and method for measuring the rate of flow and metal concentration of a liquid which contains a gamma -ray absorbing metal isotope and which flows in a pipeline. The measuring system comprises a radioactive source of gamma rays, which oscillates in a direction at an angle to the liquid flow, an accelerometer as a component of the gamma -ray source, a gamma -ray detector arranged adjacent to a part of the pipeline in order to measure the presence of a metal isotope in the flowing liquid, and an electrical circuit and a measuring device which is arranged to measure and display the rate of flow of the oscillating gamma -ray source when the metal isotope in the flowing liquid absorbs gamma -radiation. If necessary, the concentration of isotopes which absorb gamma -rays, e.g. iron compounds which are contained in the flowing liquid, can be monitored by a counting device in order to measure the metal concentration of the liquid or the ash concentration of a flowing liquid originating from coal.
