PURPOSE:To obtain a stable nickel chloride-graphite interlayer compd. useful as an electric cell active substance, an organic reaction catalyst etc. by bringing a graphite fiber, obtained by heat-treating a carbon fiber having specific texture, into contact with NiCl4. CONSTITUTION:The hydrocarbon 2 (e.g. benzene) in an oil bath 1 is vaporized and mixed with carrier gas H2, and the partial pressure of the hydrocarbon is regulated to 0.5-500Torr. The gaseous mixture is then introduced into an electric furnace 3 kept at 900-3,000 deg.C, and decomposed. The carbon fiber 6 is grown on a substrate 5 coated with an ultrafine granular metal 4 (e.g. Fe) having 100- 300Angstrom particle diameter, and then graphitized at 2,000-3,500 deg.C. The graphite carbon, having the texture wherein the hexagonal net surface of the carbon is arranged in parallel with the fiber axis and in an annual ring shape, is thus obtained. Then the graphite fiber is brought into contact with powdered Nicl4 under a chlorine atmosphere, and the nickel chloride-graphite interlayer compd., having the composition expressed by the formula CxNiCl2+y (4<x<12, and 0<=y<1), can be obtained. |
