A dust and fume collector comprises a filter chamber contg. a rotary drum having a gas permeable surface. A hopper is connected to the bottom of the chamber and a fan moves gas from an inlet of the chamber through the filtering surface to an outlet. The inlet includes a conduit which directs incoming gas towards the hopper and terminates where incoming gas particles discharged from the conduit do not impinge directly onto the drum surface. A significant portion of dust particles discharged from the conduit are collected directly by the hopper without being scattered throughout the chamber. Dust particles are thrown off the drum surface due to centrifugal force so that the filter does not become clogged.
