In order effectively to control the side-stream air proportion of the smoke without reducing the production performance of the cigarette-making machine, the filter of the cigarette has an annular circumferential groove (35) in order that air can penetrate directly into the fibrous body of filter material after it has passed through apertures in the tip paper. Conventional plug wrapping paper is used instead of the highly porous teabag paper in order to wrap the fibrous filter material. The groove (35) can be produced by means of a grooving apparatus (22) which can be equipped, for example, with two rotating knives and a spacer, with radial cutting edges, which can be moved in rotation, these cutting edges clearing material from each filter plug (16) during its transportation on a rotatably movable drum (10) of a cigarette-making machine. Optionally, the grooving apparatus (22) can be used with a plurality of rotating knives arranged closely side by side which cut only through the plug wrapping paper, in order to produce a number of annular grooves or slits lying closely together on the filter periphery. <IMAGE> |
