The invention relates to a retaining element 1, in particular for fastening a cladding panel on a support panel, having a base part 2, which can be fastened on the support panel via retaining elements 6, and a retaining part 3 which is connected to said base part 2 and can engage in an opening in the cladding panel. According to the invention a drive-type connection 4 can be established between the base part 2 and the retaining part 3 by rotation about the longitudinal axis, it being possible for the retaining part 3 to be screwed, by a screwing region 5, into the opening in the cladding panel.
