The invention relates to a device for transporting containers between container stores and at least one travelling gantry crane and for loading the containers from the crane onto a transporting apparatus and vice versa. The device is characterised by a large-scale electrical overhead conveyer with travelling trolleys (16) for conveying the containers and a rail guide (13, 14, 15) between the container store and the crane (1), a container bridge (8) with a container conveying device (9), which extends transversely to the direction of travel of the crane, being arranged in the crane (1), which container conveying device (9) has at its end a positioning area (12) for containers, across which the overhead conveyer rail (15), which is arranged parallel to the direction of travel of the crane, extends in order to move the travelling trolley (16) over the positioning area to accept or deliver a container (4), a device (17) for stopping the travelling trolley (16) being provided on the container bridge. <IMAGE>
