In laundry driers working on the evaporation or vaporisation principle, the transmission of the thermal energy takes place indirectly via air or heat-conducting walls by contact with the laundry to be dried. The transmission entails a relatively high heat loss. In the drier according to the invention, the wet laundry is irradiated directly by high-energy electromagnetic waves. As a radiant heating source there are one or more radiant heaters (5) which are located outside or inside the drying chamber (1) and which are screened off from the laundry to be dried by walls transparent to the radiation spectrum of a radiant heater (5). The waves are deflected into the interior of the chamber by reflectors (6, 9). If the radiant heaters (5) are located outside the chamber (1), the chamber wall is made transparent to the radiation spectrum of the radiant heaters (5). <IMAGE>
