In an extendable and removable roof component for motor vehicles, whose cover which closes off one section in the skin of the roof of the vehicle is detachably supported on the vehicle roof at the front end via disengageable swivel joints and at the rear via an extension mechanism, and in which the extension mechanism consists on the one hand of an extension arm which is adjustably mounted on the vehicle roof and can be driven by means of a pinion via a hand crank or a rotary joint and consists on the other hand of a link, which is open at one end, on the cover, it is proposed in order to reduce the number of individual components of the extension mechanism whilst simultaneously increasing the protection against break-ins and avoiding the cover being removed by unauthorised persons, for example by children travelling along in the vehicle, that the extension arm should be formed by means of an arcuate carrier which is provided with a toothing and is held so as to be slidable over a part of its length in a housing which is formed from two half-shells and attached to the vehicle roof, and the arcuate carrier is assigned a releasable locking device which bounds its adjustability in the closing direction of the cover.
