PURPOSE:To obtain graphite electrodes of uniform and high quality in a high yield without causing breaking by arranging electrodes while interposing a spacer layer with high electric conductivity provided with a central part with no or low electric conductivity between the confronting ends of the electrodes, and supplying electric current to heat the electrodes in a press contact state. CONSTITUTION:Many calcined electrodes 2 are arranged in a long-sized furnace 1 made of refractory brick in series while interposing a spacer layer 7 with high electric conductivity provided with a central part 6 with no or low electric conductivity between the confronting ends of the electrodes 2, and the space between the furnace 1 and the electrodes 2 is filled with coke breeze 3. The electrodes 2 are put in a press contact state with a hydraulic press 5, and electric current is supplied through terminal electrodes 4, 4' to graphitize the electrodes 2. The temp. difference between the central and peripheral parts of the contact cross-section of each of the electrodes 2 due to heat generation can be effectively reduced, so the calcined electrodes can be directly graphitized without causing breaking, cracking or degeneration. |
