The present invention relates to a safety ladder for sailing yachts which is designed in such a way that it can serve as the main piece of a jury rudder system in the event of fracture of the rudder system. To this end, the conventional rigid connecting parts between ladder and boat are replaced by joints which in normal use as a ladder are locked and when a jury rudder is required serve as pivots of the same. The ladder beams form the rudder head. The treads have openings into which a narrow plate can be inserted as a rudder blade.
