A method and an apparatus for the handling of unit goods by means of a load pallet or roller pallet comprising a pallet deck (1), two opposite pallet sides (2,3) which are either fixedly mounted on the pallet deck (1) or are pivotally mounted to the pallet deck, an openable and lockable pallet gate (4), and at the fourth side of the pallet one or more obstructions (11), for example bars (11), which are vertically displaceable in slots (12) in the pallet sides (2,3), or in outer rails, and which in an upper end position allows access to a space of the pallet for loading a layer of unit goods, whereas in the bottom end position said bars 11 obstruct loading. The bars may form an entire rear pallet wall which is vertically movable. During use, the pallet is moved to a loading position and is loaded from the "rear" side formed with the obstructing bars (11) in one or more layers above each other, whereby the bars (11) preferably are automatically lifted when layers of the unit goods are loaded, and which fall back to a locked position when the respective layer of unit goods has been loaded.
