In a choke for operation at a mains frequency of 50 or 60 Hz, and for the generation of flux densities greater than 0.8 Teslas, the ferromagnetic core (10) is designed as an annular hollow cylinder in whose cavity (18) is located the complete insulated copper winding (19). The annular hollow cylinder of the core (10) forms a circuit and has a rectangular cross-section. Additionally, it has one or more air slots (15, 16) which extend over the complete annulus of the hollow cylinder, and a separating gap, so that the annulus is not completely closed. The choke, with low power loss, has a very compact construction and is used as a ballast for a compact low-pressure discharge lamp, particularly for installation in a socket or in an adapter. <IMAGE> |
