In a ballast for gas-discharge lamps which are supplied from the AC mains, especially fluorescent lamps, having a rectifier-multiplier circuit and a polarity-reversing circuit between the rectifier-multiplier circuit and the gas-discharge lamps, the switching elements which are independent of power are arranged in a housing (19), and the switching elements which are dependent on the power of the respective gas-discharge lamp are arranged in a second housing (20), which can be connected electrically and, if required mechanically, to the first housing (19), for production-engineering simplification and in order to simplify matching to different gas-discharge lamps. <IMAGE>
