PURPOSE:An inhibitor against growth of dental bacteria, having high specificity to Streptococcus mutans, not being influenced by a surface active agent, having high safety, capable of being added to foods, oral agents, etc., containing l-alpha- cadinol as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:An inhibitor against growth of dental bacteria containing l-alpha- cadinol shown by the formula as an active ingredient. The compound shown by the formula with a concentration of 1/50,000 inhibits completely the growth of Streptococcus mutans, and yet has no growth inhibitory action on bacteria in the intestine. It is also not influenced by a surface active agent. The compound shown by the formula is a component in a purified oil of natural plant, has high safety, and no feeling of physical disorder in the mouth. Properly a solution of the compound shown by the formula in propylene glycol, or glycerine is added to chewing gum, candy, troche, etc., or an emulsion of the compound shown by the formula is added to toothpaste, mouthwash, etc.
