The invention relates to an apparatus for bending the edges of metal sheets by means of a machine power-operated bending head which can be guided along parallel to the edge. Bending is carried out, with the forming tools stationary and pressed against the edge of the sheet, by pulling the bending head along the edge of the sheet. Appropriate power drives must therefore be provided for the forming tools, for example hydraulic cylinders, which permit the transfer movements of the forming tools at the beginning and end of a bending operation and are capable of holding the forming tools continuously in the closed position during the bending operation. During forming involving pulling, high pulling forces acting on the workpiece have to be overcome in the drawing direction. Forming forces orthogonal to the drawing direction furthermore occur and these must be counteracted by guiding forces. In order to accept the pulling and guiding forces, the workpiece is secured, at least in the region of the edge, on a robust guide frame following the same course as the edge of the sheet. The apparatus is virtually silent in operation and smooth workpiece surfaces are obtained at a high work rate. |
