A process for monitoring the lower thread in a sewing machine, where the thread is pulled off during sewing using a lower thread spool, comprises using a sensor to monitor the thread spool rotation. The sensor produces a signal when only a certain amount of thread is left on the spool, by detecting the rotational direction of the lower thread spool (1).
