The visual display device (10) consists of a number of modules (12) which are mounted on a common panel (14) and connected via conductors (16) to a central electrical programming circuit (18). Each module (12) has a rectangular group of light-emitting diodes on its surface. The selected LED in each module (12) are excited in such a way that they produce alphanumeric and/or other graphic displays. The image displayed can be reproduced without distortion. The display device can be produced in a large-area design and with virtually any expedient dimensioning, even in wall size, for example. The display device can be used, for example, for map-like presentations for use for military purposes.
