The device for maintaining the distance between the annular plates of a crushing machine incorporates hammers which are pivotally mounted on a shaft in a rotor. The device comprises components with a U-shaped cross-section which fit together over the edges of the annular plates. The branches of the components extend over and are secured to the sides of the plates whilst the core of each component abuts the cores of its immediate neighbours. - The junction between the end faces of adjacent components lies in the radial plane of the pivotal axis of the hammers. Each core presents a recess in its end face, the length of which corresponds to the pivotal radius of the hammers and the width of which corresponds to half the thickness of the hammers. Thus the hammers freely pivot out, from between the plates.
