Infrared optical fiber is comprised of a core (1) that transmits infrared light, a coating (2) which has a lower refraction index than the core, a polymer tube (3) to protect the core. One of the metal halogenides (i.e. KRS-5, KRS-6, TlBr, TlCl, and AgBr) is used as core material. One of the metal halogenides (AgCl, AgBr, TlCl, and TlBr), which has a lower refraction index than the core material, is used as the coating material.
