PURPOSE:To eliminate a tracking groove to be formed to a substrate and to simplify the manufacturing process of an optical recording medium, by irradiating the writing light in the form of a pulse train while performing the tracking control by means of a recess part formed to a recording layer, and forming a pit train to the recording layer to carry out the record writing. CONSTITUTION:The irradiation of both tracking light and writing light are carried out in terms of time series. Then the writing is carried out after formation of a recess part 7, or the writing is executed by means of a medium to which the part 7 is previously formed. The writing light uses a semiconductor laser, an He-Ne laser, an argon laser, etc. With such a writing method, a pit train having equal or smaller width than the linear part 7 is formed within said part 7. When the tracking control is carried out for writing, two photodetectors, for example, are set close to each other. Then the output difference between these two detectors is detected by means of the difference in reflection factor produced by the difference in thickness of a recording layer owing to the part 7 and the difference in phase produced by an interference effect due to the level difference of the part 7.
