PURPOSE:To enhance cleaning performance by installing two magnetic brush rolls adjacent to each other, said rolls each having a main magnetic pole nearest to an image bearing body, different in polarity from each other, and said main magnetic pole on the upstream roll and its adjacent magnetic pole on the downstream side in the same roll being same in polarity. CONSTITUTION:A developer 14 formed into a brush on an upstream sleeve 2 is carried by clockwise rotation of the sleeve 2 and rubs the surface of a photosensitive layer 1a. At that time, since fixed magnets 17, 18 same in polarity and different in magnetic force are arranged, the developer 14 is ready to separate from the sleeve 2. Since a fixed magnet 22 in a downstream sleeve 4 different in polarity from the magnets 17, 18 is arranged, the developer carried from the upstream sleeve 2 is conveyed in a belt-shaped layer to the downstream sleeve 4. The distance D between both sleeves 2, 4 are shortened to improve its conveyability. As a result, cleaning performance is enhanced by improving the flow of the developer.
