PURPOSE:To obtain a highly oriented acetylene polymer having high electrical conductivity and anisotropy, with a simple process, by contacting acetylene monomer gas with the surface of solid crystal of benzene or p-xylene containing acetylene-polymerization catalyst, thereby effecting the polymerization of acetylene. CONSTITUTION:The polymerization of acetylene is carried out by contacting acetylene monomer gas with the surface of a solid crystal of benzene or p- xylene containing preferably 0.01-0.5 moles of an acetylene-polymerization catalyst [e.g. Ti(OR)4-AlR3' (R and R' are organic group; M is transition metal), M(acetyl acetonate)3-AlR', etc.]. The initial pressure of the acetylene monomer is preferably >=100mm.Hg. The cis-polymer can be prepared by carrying out the polymerization at a temperature below the freezing point of benzene or p-xylene, and the cis-polymer can be converted to the trans-polymer by heating at 150- 200 deg.C for 1/2 hours.
