PURPOSE:To provide a monoazo compd. which gives good dyed articles, does not undergo lowering in dispersibility even at a high temp. and has a crystal modification characterized by a specified X-ray diffraction pattern. CONSTITUTION:The compd. of formula I is diazotized and coupled with the compd. of formula II or III in an aq. medium at 0-15 deg.C for 30min to 10hr. The product is treated in the presence of a dispersant (e.g. a condensate between formaldehyde and naphthalenesulfonic acid) in an aq. medium or in an org. solvent (e.g. methanol) at 15-140 deg.C for 3min to 30hr to obtain the monoazo compd. of formula IV or V and having an alpha type crystal modification characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern (CuKalpha) with two intensive peaks at angles (2theta) of diffraction of 18.5 deg. and 25.5 deg. and with five medium-intensity peaks at angles (2theta) of diffraction of 9.2 deg., 10.3 deg., 11.5 deg., 14.7 deg. and 20.4 deg..
