PURPOSE:To provide corrosion resistance superior to the existing medium without damaging the magnetic characteristic in writing and erasing from the substrate side by subjecting the surface of an amorphous magnetic thin film to oxidation treatment to form a corrosion resistant layer. CONSTITUTION:An amorphous magnetic film is provided with a corrosion resistant layer by subjecting the surface thereof to oxidation treatment in a magnetic recording medium having a recording layer of said magnetic film formed on a substrate. Substrates consisting of glass, metal, quartz, acrylic resin, and polycarbonate are used as said substrate, and GdTbFe GdTbFeCo, GdCo, GdFe, TbFe, DyFe, TbDyFe, etc. are used as the amorphous magnetic film. The surface of said amorphous magnetic thin film is subjected to oxidation treatment, and the corrosion resistant layer is formed on the surface opposite to the substrate of said thin film. Although the thickness of the corrosion resistantlayer formed on the surface of the amorphous magnetic alloy thin film by the oxidation treatment differs in accordance with the thickness of the amorphous magnetic alloy thin film, the thickness is preferably regulated to 50-1,000Angstrom when the thickness of the film is 2,000Angstrom .
