In the production of extruded products from vegetable, especially wood, fragments it is known to determine the chip orientation across the entire cross-section. By contrast, the object of the invention is to orient individual layers of the strand (1), preferably the outer layers (2, 3), differently from the centre layer (4). This is achieved with the aid of orientation slides (10, 11) which compact the composition (17) disposed in the pressing chamber (7) of the extruder (6) section by section corresponding to its thickness during a reciprocating opening movement. The backward movement is greater than the forward movement. However, the latter leads to a compression of the composition which has fallen into the chamber released and thus to an orientation perpendicularly to the pressing surface of the extruder ram (20). <IMAGE>
