PURPOSE:To prepare the titled substance in high yield and selectivity, by hydrogenating dimethyladiponitrile in a liquid phase in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to obtain a reaction liquid containing dimethylhexamethylenediamine, and thermally cyclizing the product in the presence of an Ni catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Dimethyladiponitrile is subjected to the liquid-phase hydrogenation at 80-160 deg.Cin the presence of hydrogenation catalyst (preferably Raney Ni) to obtain a reaction liquid containing dimethylhexamethylenediamine. An Ni catalyst (preferably Raney Ni) is added to the reaction liquid, or the treated reaction liquid obtained by removing solvent, catalyst, etc., or dimethylhexamethylenediamine separated from the raction liquid, and cyclized by heating at 100- 230 deg.C to obtain the titled substance. The amount of the catalyst for the cyclization reaction is 0.01-0.5pts.wt. per 1pt.wt. of dimethylhexamethylenediamine. USE:Agricultural and pharmaceutical raw materials, vulcanization accelerator, modifier for synthetic resins, textile lubricant, etc.
