PURPOSE:To increase the discharge capacity of an alkaline battery and flatten its discharge voltage by forming a reducing layer on the surface of a positive active material which faces a negative electrode; the positive active material consists of silver peroxide granules with specified diameters and silver oxide powder having a smaller diameter. CONSTITUTION:A positive active material 2 made of mixture consisting of 70- 30wt% silver peroxide granules (A) with diameters of 0.1-0.25mm. and 30- 70wt% silver oxide powder with diameters of 0.02-0.05mm., is molded into a given shape. Next, the thus obtained body is inserted into a positive can 1 by pressure so as to bring it into close contact with the can 1. On the other hand, a reducing agent used in electrolyte is added to make the surface of the positive active material 2 which faces a negative electrode so as to reduce silver oxide into oxide and silver peroxide into silver oxide or silver, thereby forming a reduced surface layer (C) consisting of silver or silver oxide. By the means mentioned above, the voltage of a battery is adjusted to be the same level as that of silver oxide by achieving voltage control and the capacity of the battery is increased. |
