A magnetic-card coder which can be easily handled manually consists of a pistol-grip-like housing (1) with probe (9) attached thereto for placement against a surface of a card to be magnetised. In the housing (1), a circuit including direct-current source (40) is provided with a capacitor (16) for creating a magnetic field via windings (8) encircling the probe (9). The capacitor (16) is discharged via a switch (15). Another switch (25) is used for reversing the polarity of the magnetic field. <IMAGE>
