PURPOSE:In alkylating the side chain of an aromatic hydrocarbon compound containing H on a carbon at alpha-position of side chain with an olefin, to use a catalyst obtained by supporting Na and/or Na amide on a carrier consisting of K2O and Al3O2. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic compound (e.g., toluene) containing H on a carbon at alpha-position of side chain is reacted with an olefin (e.g., propylene) by the use of a catalyst obtained by supporting Na and/or Na amide on a carrier shown by the formula (x is 0.5-11), to give a side chain-alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g., isobutylbenzene). The carrier can support 0.1-20wt% calculated as Na atom of Na compound, and, since absorption and support are carried out extremely rapidly, the carrier has improved dispersion state, so the catalyst providing high activity and selectivity ratio can be formed.
