PURPOSE:To adjust the projecting length of an electrode to a prescribed value, by setting the distance between the top end part of the electrode and a prescribed part of a welding torch to a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:When a welding torch 10 is lowered from the top of an adjusting section 20 and a limit switch 24 is turned on before a welding core 14 contacts a detecting plate 23, it can be known that the projecting length (l) of the welding core 14 is shorter than the distance between the limit switch 24 and detecting plate 23. When the welding core 14 contacts the detecting plate 23 before the limit switch 24 is turned on, it can be known that the projecting length (l) of the welding core 14 is longer than the distance between the limit switch 24 and detecting plate 23. Therefore, it is judged that whether or not the projecting length (l) of the welding core 14 is a prescribed one through the timing of the turning on of the limit switch 24 and that of the contact between the welding core 14 and detecting plate 23.
