In an image carrier for generating a toner image on its surface, said surface has a maximum surface roughness of 20 mu m or less and a mean surface roughness which fulfils the relation r </= 2d between the mean surface roughness and the size of the toner particles, in which r is the mean surface roughness and d is the mean grain size of the toner particles, or said surface has a contact angle with water of at least 70 DEG or a pencil hardness denoted by F (measured in accordance with the JIS test method K-5400) or a greater pencil hardness. Furthermore, a method of generating an image with the image carrier and its use are described.
