PURPOSE:To measure exactly and easily the campactability value of molding sand by detecting the filled-up or empty condition of a test cylinder and removing the build-up part therefrom while moving said cylinder from a sample supplying part provided with a lump collapsing means to a measuring part and pressurizing the sample with a head provided with a device for measuring the amt. of compression. CONSTITUTION:The bottom end of a test cylinder 1 is closed with a bottom cover 55 and a sample 13a is supplied into the cylinder until the sample builds up from the flange part at the top end in the stage of supplying the sample 13a into the cylinder 1. The build-up part is made flush with the flange face by a scraper 3 in the mid-way of horizontal moving of the cylinder 1. The sample surface made flush with the flange surface is then pressed by the descending force of a pressurizing head 81 to compact the sample 13a. Values C,B are measured while the volume is decreased by the compaction. The head 81 is slightly moved upward and thereafter a bottom cover 55 is opened and the head 81 is lowered again to extrude the sample 13a. The cylinder 1 is returned to the home position and the values C, B are repeatedly measured.
