PURPOSE:To enhance photosensitivity by incorporating a specified amt. of amine in an electrostatic charge generating phase. CONSTITUTION:A charge generating phase is formed by adding amine in an amt. of <20mol per mole of a charge generating substance into the coating solvent of the charge generating phase to disperse it into the solvent, and coating with the obtained liquid dispersion. As a result, said substance is not dissolved with the amine due to its presence of such a large amount during formation of a coat film, thus permitting a coating operation maintained in a dispersion state and enhancement of photosensitivity. The azo type pigments having remarkable effect of amine addition in the coating solvent of the charge generating layer are compds. represented by formulae I -III in which Ar<1>, Ar<2> are each an aromatic residue; R<1>, R<2> are each H or the like; (A) in formula I is a group of formulae IV; X is OH; Z is an aromatic ring or the like; A' is aryl; and (A) in formulae II and III is a group of formulae V.
