PURPOSE:To obtain a polyphenylene sulfide having high molecular weight, stably, by reacting a mixture of anhydrous sodium sulfide and sodium sulfide with a polyhalogenated aromatic compound in an organic plar solvent controlling the amount of water in the system. CONSTITUTION:The objective polyphenylene sulfide can be prepared by reacting (A) a mixture of (i) 0.1-15wt% of anhydrous sodium sulfide and (ii) 99.9-85wt% of anhydrous sodium sulfide with (B) a polyhalogenated aromatic compound such as p-dichlorobenzene, in (C) an organic polar solvent such as N-methylpyrrolidone, controlling the water-content in the polymerization system to <=0.3mol per 1mol of sodium sulfide.
