Individual collapsible boxes (F) are raised, by means of bearing elements (18) supporting just the edges of the box, to form a partial stack (T). When a collapsible box (F) has been raised, it is accepted by support elements (53). The bearing elements (18) are then moved outwards by means of a gear and return to their lower starting position outside the space to receive another collapsible box (F). Another collapsible box (F) is inserted even before the backwards movement of the bearing elements (18) has been completed, so that the bearing elements (18) can accept another collapsible box (F) immediately when they have reached the end of their backwards path. Making the backwards movement of the bearing elements (18) and insertion of a collapsible box (F) simultaneous achieves a short cycle time and therefore a high output for the machine.
