The application relates to a process for the preparation of D (+)-biotin from D-arabinose via isopropylidene-D-arabinose (I) and 6,9-dihydroxy-7,8-isopropylidenedioxynona-2,4-dienoic ester (II), characterised in that the synthesis is carried out via an intermediate of the formula VIII <IMAGE> in which R<1> represents lower alkyl or aralkyl and R<2> represents a protective group for a hydroxyl function.
