In the process, the material to be comminuted is pre-comminuted between two rollers (3) which run in opposing directions and are profiled on their surface, and if necessary after intermediate storage it is then conventionally milled in a mill (1) to the desired fineness or grain size. The rollers can be arranged in or above the feed (2) to the mill (1), and the mill (1) can also be arranged on a tractor with trailer. In combine harvesters the rollers (3) are advantageously arranged in the region of the grain tank, either at the outlet of the grain elevator or at the feed to the grain outlet pipe. <IMAGE>
