For an infinite adjustment of vehicle seats, a rod clamping device is proposed which operates according to the wedge principle and can transmit large forces but is nevertheless easy to release when loaded. For this purpose, a wedge face is constructed on a sliding block and the sliding block can be displaced transversely with respect to the axis of the rod, a restoring element, which acts in the direction of the wedge angle which opens, engaging on the clamping element. <IMAGE>
