PURPOSE:To manufacture a fiber reinforced Al alloy by uniformly mixing Al alloy powder with reinforcing staple fibers, and hot pressing the mixture at a temp. above the solidus line temp. of the Al alloy under static pressure. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of Al alloy powder with staple fibers of ceramics such as SiC, Al2O3 or Si3N4 is charged into a capsular vessel made of mild steel. After evacuating and sealing the vessel, the mixture is pressed at a temp. above the solidus line temp. of the Al alloy under 1,000kg/mm.<2> static pressure for about 10min, and it is solidified by cooling. A fiber reinforced Al alloy with superior strength is obtd.
