PURPOSE:To obtain tocopherol from a composition containing tocopherol, by dissolving the composition in a solvent, letting the compound to be adsorbed to a basic anion exchange resin, and selectively eluting with a solvent treated with carbon dioxide gas. CONSTITUTION:A composition containing tocopherol is dissolved in a solvent (e.g. n-hexane), and the solution is passed through a basic anion exchange resin (e.g. Diaion PA-304S) to adsorb the tocopherol compound. The unadsorbed impurities such as hydrocarbons, triglycerides, etc. are removed, and the tocopherol is selectively eluted by using a CO2-treated solvent as an elutant. The treatment of the solvent with carbon dioxide gas can be carried out by saturated the solvent with carbon dioxide gas, which is achieved by adding dry ice to the solvent. The elutant inhibits the desorption of pigments and fatty acids other than tocopherol, and carbon dioxide gas can be removed easily by the heat applied in the removal of the solvent by distillation.
