PURPOSE:To attain detection of the synchronizing signal regardless of forward or reverse driving direction of a tape by recording the synchronizing signals in the form of a symmetrical pattern array on the basis of the center of said synchronizing signals and extracting the synchronizing signal after detecting the recorded pattern array. CONSTITUTION:A symmetrical pattern part (b) is formed, and signals (c) and (d) for detection of tape driving direction are provided by one bit before and after the part (b). The reproduction data signal B is supplied to an input terminal D of a shift register 1, and the reproduction clock signal B of a tape is supplied to a clock terminal CP of the register 1. The signal A is converted into the parallel reproduction data signal C from the serial form with the clock timing of the signal B. This signal C is supplied to digital comparators 2 and 3. The symmetrical code signal D equal to a symmetrical part of the synchronizing signal is supplied to the comparator 2. Then the signal C is compared with the signal D. The comparison detection signal E is set at levels L and H when the discordance and the coincidence are obtained from the above-mentioned comparison respectively. The output of the signal E is supplied to an NAND circuit 4.
