The invention relates to an apparatus for producing tension-free steel-wire strands or ropes by preforming. The object of the invention is to develop a preforming apparatus, the use of which guarantees a sufficient preforming effect, without impairing the productivity of the stranding process and without reducing the quality of the treated material, and which can be adjusted easily, gives reproducible results and treats the surface of the wires with care. This object is achieved in that the apparatus consists of mutually axially displaceable and rotatable guide bodies which are firmly connected to the rotor of the stranding machine (axis of the guide bodies = rotor axis) and which contain bores arranged on a respective reference circle. The wires or strands to be preformed are guided individually through the respective bore of each guide body. During the stranding, a permanent helical deformation is imparted to the wires/strands. During the adjustment of the values according to the invention for the curvature of the bore edges and the spacing and rotation of the guide bodies, the pitch and diameter of the helix correspond to the position in the strand/rope structure. The invention can be used in the production of all round-strand ropes.
