A method and a device for limiting the speed of internal combustion engines with applied ignition are proposed, the fuel mixture being weakened and the firing order impaired when a first, fixable limit speed (n1) is reached. This can be achieved, for example, by shortening or blocking out injection signals, by ignition timing control or blocking out of ignition signals. At a second, higher speed (n2) an essentially greater weakening of the fuel mixture, especially by shutting off the fuel supply, follows for absolutely reliable speed limiting. In this way a gentle and comfortable speed limiting can be set at the first limit speed (n1) which avoids overheating of the engine. <IMAGE>
