A transport device for a thermoforming machine for forming films or sheets from thermoplastic has transport chains which penetrate into the film or sheet by means of sharp travelling lugs. An opening is made in the thermoplastic film or sheet by a front piercing part and then the travelling lug is moved relatively in the plane of the thermoplastic film so that a holding part with reduced cross-section of the travelling lugs comes to lie in the region of the opening, so that there is free play between this opening and the holding part.
