In a coking oven (1) having a multiplicity of horizontal coking chambers (3) sealed at the top by an oven cover (2), with a tamping machine (8) movable on the machine side along the coking chambers (3) and, if appropriate, with closable suction openings (10) provided in the oven cover and a filling-gas cleaning car (12) movable on movement rails (11) on the oven cover (2) parallel to the tamping machine (8), the emission into the surrounding atmosphere, especially the emission of filling gas during the assembling step of a tamped cake, is minimised by providing, on the machine side of the coking chambers (3), a movable caption device (18) for the filling gases issuing from the door openings of the coking chambers (3) and a supporting and/or bearing structure (19) for the caption device (18). <IMAGE>
