Process for the preparation of an active and stable catalyst for the hydrodemetallation of heavy crudes. The invention relates more particularly to a catalyst in which the hydrogenation metal chosen from group VI B of the Periodic Table is present in a quantity 86 % lower than the quantity which is generally deposited in the commercial catalysts. It does not contain any activator and has a specific surface of at least 180 m<2>/g, at least 75.6 % of the volume of the pores being made up of pores with a diameter greater than 30 nm and it has a ratio I (metal of group VI B)/(Al), determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, of 0.5 to 0.9. The support employed for preparing the catalyst has special surface properties which are suitable for the preparation of the catalyst.
