PURPOSE:To obtain easily a highly conc. coal/water slurry having excellent flow characteristics, by mixing an anionic surfactant and water with dry-distilled coal, obtd. by crushing coal and dry distilling it, in such a proportion as to give a slurry contg. solid at a specified concn. or above. CONSTITUTION:Coal 1 such as brown coal or bituminous coal is pulverized in a pulverizer 2 and dry-distilled in a dry distillation column 3 to separate a volatile component 4 and dry-distilled oil 5. After the oil 5 is added to the resulting dry- distilled coal 6, water 7 and an anionic surfactant 8 are added thereto in such a proportion as to give a solid concn. of 60wt% or above, and mixing is carried out in a mixer 9 to obtain the desired highly conc. coal/water slurry. In this way, dry distillation renders the surface of coal hydrophobic and the addition of the resulting dry-distilled oil to dry-distilled coal renders the surface of the coal more hydrophobic, wherby water absorption is lowered and slurrying of the coal in water at a high concn. can be attained.
